Happy Holidays, See You Next Year

Categories: General Dave Rathbun @ 8:30 am

There were certainly a number of interesting developments in 2011, including the release of BI 4.0 and the ever increasing hype about HANA. But more importantly my family ended the year healthy and happy and that’s far more important. I certainly wish the same for you, your family, and your friends. I’m taking a break now and will be back again to talk about mundane BI topics next year.

I will be kicking off January with the next post in my “becoming a blogger” series. I will be starting off my conference season for 2012 by attending MicroStrategy World later that month followed by attendance (and speaking) at the BI 2012 event at the end of February. I’m delivering several track sessions at BI 2012, including co-teaching a primer on universe design with Michael Welter.

But until then, best of wishes to everyone for a happy and healthy new year. 😎

Hope you had a great xmas Dave! You mentioned that you will be attending the upcoming Microstrategy World (in Miami), which spurs a couple questions I have for you.

    1. We all know you have quite a wealth of experience in/with Bobj, do you have about the same amount with MSTR?
    2. In your opinion, which platform (Bobj or Mstr) has the most robust & easiest-to-develop report, Symantec, and dashboarding capabilities?
    3. If given the choice, which single app (Bobj OR Mstr) would you select as/for the Enterprise Reporting & Mobile Solution platform for a fairly large Fortune 500 corp?
    4. Have you ever gone thru a complete Bobj-to-MSTR migration?

The reason I ask is we are considering migrating off of BO and onto MSTR, and am curious as to your experience & opinions in using the two products.

Hi Dave, I just want to thank you for all the good work you are doing, just keep it going as lots of people are benefitting from your blogs.
I request you to write a little on BO 4.0, like how different is it from the earlier versions, and what new features it has.
Thanks, and i wish you a very Happy New Year.

Dave, it’s me again, i have’nt come across anything on BO Architechture in your blogs, it would be great if you write some basic concepts about architechture.
    thanks…

Guy, I have only started with MicroStrategy products in the past year. For many years the power of the semantic layer was the primary advantage for Business Objects, and I still believe that is an advantage. However since MSTR has grown organically rather than by acquisition their product suite seems to be far more integrated. SAP has attempted to address this some, but Crystal and Web Intelligence are still separate products, and you can’t really reuse components like you can in MSTR.

I anticipate doing more with MSTR this year but will remain active with Business Objects as well.

Hi, kumar, to be very honest I have moved out of the infrastructure area since XI R2 came out and focused on the semantic layer and the various ways of consuming / distributing business intelligence. I have a friend who has talked about starting a blog around his experience in the architecture area though, so when (if 😉 ) he finally launches his web site I will be sure to post a link here. Thanks.

Dave, it looks like I will be attending the MSTR Conference in Miami too. I would love to find you and pick at your brain alittle about BO vs MSTR and the challenges you foresee in conversions of Universes, Rpts, Security, Folder Structure, etc..

Please let me know if you think you may have some time while we’re there.

P.S. I’m the guy that took Eric Vallo’s place at his old place of business…

Guy, I would be happy to talk, but as I mentioned I’m only just getting started in the past year with MSTR. Also we’re not converting any existing BOBJ projects over to MSTR. We’re trying to use whichever product is best for a particular project.
